SALCO: Seeking Directors for SALCO’s Volunteer Board of Directors

SALCO is a permanently funded legal aid clinic established to enhance access to justice for low-income South Asians in the Greater Toronto Area in a culturally and linguistically sensitive manner. SALCO works in several areas of poverty law with low-income South Asian clients, including income maintenance (Ontario Works, Ontario Disability Support Program, Canada Pension Plan, Employment Insurance, and Old Age Security), Tenant’s Rights, Immigration, Human Rights, Criminal Injuries Compensation, and limited family law advice.

SALCO is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors with 12 Directors. Meetings are held once per month (generally on the last Wednesday of each month), and last between 1 and ½ to 2 hours. In addition, the Board has three on-going committees, the Executive, the Personnel, and the Policy committee, and other ad hoc committees. Meetings of these committees are struck on an as needed basis to deal with specific issues or work that needs to be completed.

The Board of Directors is involved with:

 Overseeing the financial management of SALCO
 Policy Decisions (for example: helping in the strategic planning of the type of work that SALCO will do in the upcoming year, determining test case work)
 Personnel Decisions (for example: hiring of staff, Executive Director evaluation)
 Expansion of SALCO based on an on-going review of the needs of low-income South Asians in Ontario

Applications for membership to the SALCO Board of Directors are reviewed by the Board of Directors – Nominations Committee, which presents candidates for election on an interim basis at the Board of Directors or at our Annual General Meeting (usually held in early November of each year). Please also be advised that the selection process for board directorship was recently amended in May 2016. SALCO now accepts nominations to the board for the slate, and one (1) spot on the board of directors will be open for election from the floor at the Annual General meeting. Our bylaws and slate selection policy can be found at our website: Please contact us if you want to receive a copy by mail.

If you are interested in becoming a board member please apply via e-mail by Friday, August 25, 2017. Each board term runs for one or two years (a year in this case is one full board year – November to October).
