The Government of Canada has announced reforms to the judicial appointments process which will make the process more transparent, accountable and reflective of the diversity of Canadian society.
As a result of these changes, all interested candidates must submit their applications pursuant to the new rules and using the new forms. Pre-existing judicial pools were
disbanded as of October 20, 2016.
There are fourteen (14) federal judicial vacancies in Ontario as of January 1, 2017. The locations of the Superior Court of Justice positions are subject to change prior to
being filled, at the discretion of the Chief Justice of the Superior Court of Justice.
Four (4) vacancies for the Court of Appeal in Toronto;
Nine (9) vacancies for the Superior Court of Justice;
Three (3) in Toronto,
One (1) in the Central East Region (Newmarket),
One (1) in the Central West Region (Brampton),
One (1) in the Central West Region (Milton),
One (1) in the East Region (Belleville), and
Two (2) in East Region (Ottawa);
One (1) vacancy for the Superior Court of Justice – Family Court in the
East Region (Ottawa).
The Judicial Advisory Committees for Ontario invite applications for these judicial positions. The Superior Court of Justice has a specific need for generalist judges, particularly candidates with strong backgrounds in criminal or family law. The minimum requirement to apply to be a judge on the Court of Appeal for Ontario or the Superior Court of Justice is ten (10) years completed membership as a barrister and solicitor at the Bar of the relevant Provinces or Territories of Canada, as required by the Constitution Act, 1867.
All lawyers and provincial court judicial candidates wishing to apply must submit nine (9) completed copies of the current (October 2016) Questionnaire for Federal Judicial Appointments. This application will be valid for a period of two (2) years commencing from the date of evaluation, after which point a candidate must reapply for continued consideration. Different requirements exist for judges of the Superior Court of Justice who wish to be appointed to the Court of Appeal for Ontario.
