The Office of the Commissioner for Federal Judicial Affairs was established in 1978 to safeguard the independence of the judiciary and provide federally appointed judges with administrative services independent of the Department of Justice Canada.
The Commissioner for Federal Judicial Affairs reports to Parliament through the Minister of Justice and acts on behalf of the Minister in matters related to the administration of Part 1 of the Judges Act. The Commissioner is responsible for the effective and efficient operation and management of the Office in providing services to the federal judiciary pursuant to the Commissioner’s statutory obligations and consistent with the mandate of the Office. The Commissioner also plays an important role in supporting the Canadian Judicial Council.
In order to carry out these activities and provide services to approximately 1,100 active judges, and 850 retired judges and their survivors in Canada, the Commissioner is assisted by the Deputy Commissioner, six Directors and, at present, 70 other staff members.

Education and Experience
Degree in law from a recognized university, and admission to one of the provincial or territorial Bars in Canada, or the Chambre des notaires de la province de Québec;
Experience in senior-level decision-making on sensitive administrative matters;
Experience in providing strategic advice on complex and sensitive questions;
Experience in collaborating with senior members of the judiciary and judicial bodies would be considered an asset;
Experience in dealing with government, preferably with senior government officials;
Relevant management experience at the senior level in the private or public sector, including human resources, financial management, and the administration of discretionary aspects of laws, regulations and policies would be considered an asset; and
Experience in managing or collaborating with international projects that include judicial participation would be considered an asset.

Knowledge of the mandate, role, and responsibilities of the Commissioner for Federal Judicial Affairs;
Knowledge of the legislative and regulatory requirements, and of the mandate established under the Judges Act and its regulations;
Knowledge of the principles of judicial independence, particularly its link with the constitutional role of superior court judges in Canadian society, and its link with Parliament and the federal government;

Demonstrated ability to collaborate with representatives of other judicial bodies, as well as with senior federal officials, particularly the Secretary of the Treasury Board, the Minister of Finance, and the Minister of Justice, to obtain resources and services necessary for the judiciary;
Ability to negotiate contradictory interests and respond to external requests for which there are deadlines to respect;
Ability to analyze divergent opinions and complex situations in order to make fair and equitable recommendations; and
Superior oral and written communication skills.
Proficiency in both official languages would be preferred.
